Being a hummingbird is hard work! They have to consume about half their body weight in in nectar and bugs a day. That equals feeding on 1,000 to 2,000 flowers daily to get the nectar they need. Unless of course, they are lucky enough to find a hummingbird feeder and can gulp away.

“Happy Birthday in Heaven Jon”

Last year was my first year raising monarch butterflies. It was a lot of hard work but well worth it.

One of my greatest joys in raising them was releasing two different butterflies in honor and memory of two young men. Their lives were taken at a young age.

The male monarch butterfly in this video was named Jon, in memory of Jon Desso. Jon was a nice Christian young man that attended the school where I taught. His mom, Jane, taught my daughter when she was in the second grade.

I placed a small circular tag on Jon’s butterfly, which has three specific letters and numbers to track his migration to Mexico. Monarch Watch distributes these tags and the data collected aids in research. Jon’s tag numbers are ZEU 860.

Happy birthday in Heaven Jon! I am glad I could honor you in this way.

Rosy-cheeked Caterpillar

This summer, I found three different caterpillars in my front yard within a few minutes of each other. I decided to place them in various locations to photograph them.

I put this Eastern tiger swallowtail caterpillar on my red salvia to add a pop of color. The red reflecting off the flowers makes the caterpillar look like some sort of a strange teddy bear with rosy cheeks.

Caddy Wonky

As I look at this snowy egret, I notice his legs are caddy wonky. One leg is going in one direction, and the other is a different direction. Maybe it's because I moved and he decided to change directions.

I don't know if I made up this term or if I am spelling it right. Google does not recognize it. Anyone ever heard this term?

The Journey

Photography to me is not limited to one particular subject I intend to photograph that day. It is whatever catches my eye, or runs, hops, or flies in front of me.

This particular day, my husband and I went hiking to waterfalls in North Georgia, so I could photograph them. But, there is always the journey to and from the waterfall too where I might encounter things I want to shoot.

The fungi on this tree, caught my eye, so I grabbed my micro lens and photographed it.

While I in was in Haiti on my cruise, I explored the coastline to see what I could find. I found a colony of hermit crabs enjoying the sun and decided to photograph them during a two second exposure. I liked the milkiness of the waves the longer exposure created.

There is a small amount of movement from the top left hermit crab and the grey one because they were in a race. The top one on the right won:)

While visiting on St. Simons Island, Georgia, I wanted to see the lunar eclipse. I did not do enough research to prepared myself with my camera settings and location to shoot, so I felt I wasn't prepared. I went to bed deciding not to go.

I woke up at 5:17 A.M. and tried to go back to sleep, but all I heard was the noise of the fan. I got up and headed to the pier and met Betsy. The moon was out for a little bit then went behind the clouds. After while, I thought is was not going to come back.

The sun was starting to rise, and I wanted to get sunrise photos. I told Betsy bye and as I was leaving, I got distracted by the beautiful array of colors in the sky by the lighthouse. As I started photographing it, I heard, "Judy!" Betsy was calling me back because the clouds moved away revealing a beautiful eclipsed moon! I was so thankful she did or I would not have photographed the moon!!!!

A simple white weed flower rested below my feet as I was taking hummingbird photos.  The flower was pretty by itself, but I put a lot of other purple weed flowers around it to make the background better:)

I went to the State Botanical Garden today to capture a photo for The Digital Photography School's weekly photo challenge.  This week's theme is nature. 

I was getting ready to start my photo shoot when I thought I saw a dead bird in the middle of the road to the parking lot.   I got some sticks and went to move it to the side so it would not get run over.  As I got close, I noticed it was a bat, and it was still breathing!

I met Jordan and Maggie in the parking lot and told them I wanted to photograph the bat.  Jordan held it for me. 

The bat was shivering and cold.  After taking some photographs, I cupped the bat tightly in my hand trying to keep him warm.  Slowly, it shivered less and less.  He started to wiggle, so I put him on the ground.  The next thing we knew, he was in flight and fine!  He just needed a little warmth to get him going!  Had it not been for the challenge, I would not have gone to shoot, and the bat probably would have been run over by a car!

I hadn't even prayed yet to ask the Lord to bring to me what He wanted me to photograph.  He knows what I am thinking though!
