It makes me sad when the hummingbirds leave each fall. A worker from the Garden saw a hummer October 15 at the Garden. That is a record for the hummers leaving the Garden since I have been keeping track in 2011. At least they are sticking around a little longer. 

It does give me something to look forward to during the LONG cold winter:)

I spent about five hours in this small section of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia photographing two hummingbirds busy feeding and fighting each other. The flowers are lush in this section this year and have been a hummingbird magnet.

I found several new perches I did not know about because I haven't spent much time in this section. This tall rose branch was one of his favorite branches. 

He finally landed on the perch, and I got my perfect background when it started to rain. It did not bother me. I covered my gear and continued to shoot.

I love this immature male's markings on his neck. It looks like he has on a colorful necklace. Location: The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, Athens, Georgia

A friend of mine told me the hummingbirds were feeding on the thistle near the power line at The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, so I went out this morning to try to photograph them.

I went near the power line at The State Botanical Garden of Georgia to see if the same male Ruby-throated hummingbird still resides on his normal perch.  I waited for a while, but he did not come.  I did find this immature male hummingbird on the same tree but a different branch.  This area is not mapped on the Hummingbird Trail.

Today, as I was going through my photographs, I stopped and studied this hummingbird.  I looked where his beak was and quickly figured out what he was doing.  He was getting the nectar from the base of the flower.

His Favorite Branch

I posted earlier in the summer a female Ruby-throated hummingbird's favorite branch; now I wanted to post the immature males favorite branch.  I spent a lot of my summer at The State Botanical Garden of Georgia.   So much so that I knew where the hummingbird's favorite perches were throughout the garden. 

 

I knew where his favorite branch was, so I set my tripod up real close in hopes he would not mind. 

 

One time the hummer landed on a branch five feet above my head to check me out.

Recently, I discovered a new location to photograph the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird.  I had to move weeds taller than my head away from the flowers, so I could get a good shot.  He's not afraid of me and let me camp out in his territory.  He was more focused on chasing the other hummers away to defend his spot.
