This White House-chested Emerald hummingbird was checking me out in Trinidad. 

Paul and I had a wonderful time on our cruise this past November into the beginning of December last year. We traveled to many countries, but we took this particular cruise to visit Trinidad because of the amazing hummingbirds there.

Paul and I went to Theodore and Gloria's home and spent the day photographing his hummingbirds.

Each year, I look back at the year behind me.

 

I love my Butterfly Club, which started in spring 2023. I love releasing butterflies with them. They love to name them. 

 

A neighbor found five baby bunnies. A massive storm came in the night before, blowing away their nesting material. They were exposed and vulnerable.

 

Sadly, four passed away. I was able to take one to the Little Ponderosa Zoo and Rescue. He made it!

 

My son moved to Cali in 2023, which made me sad. He is a wonderful son, and I miss him being much closer!

 

Building our dream home was delayed once again. Our old builder added a basement to the house to suit the lot better, but the final cost was way out of our budget! We have a new builder now who has agreed to our every request.

 

As with age, my body is falling apart. I was having breathing issues and found out I have a partially paralyzed diaphragm. I was shooting and walking on ginormous boulders when my foot moved in my boot, causing me to fall. I didn’t know I was hurt.

 

We took a 14-day cruise to the Caribbean in the West Indies. We enjoyed island hopping. We took this cruise because it went to Trinidad, where they have many beautiful species of hummingbirds.

 

Wendell, a wildlife and nature photographer, met and took us to Theodore’s home. There were so many hummingbirds—I stood in awe. I couldn’t even think where to start. I was lost. 

 

I started as I usually do when photographing hummingbirds, pointed my camera at this Verse flower, and waited for a customer to feed. I had a few visitors, including this copper-rumped hummingbird. Luckily, we stayed there a good while, and I got my act together.

 

I am looking forward to all the Lord has in store!

I loved being eye to eye with this little fellow for several hours. Wherever he went, I followed. I did not have to travel far because he stayed around using this yucca plant to defend his territory!

I posted this photograph of a rufous hummingbird back in September, but now I have my YouTube video of him. you can see the original post here.

The background story: I visited the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden in September to photograph hummingbirds. But, the garden boasts a massive 127 acres, which could be a huge obstacle to me finding the little fellows. That’s a big place to find such a tiny bird!

I prayed my normal prayer, “Lord, show me or bring to me what you want me to photograph.” My prayer was answered!

For two hours, I had the privilege of photographing and taking video of this male rufous hummingbird. In the video, he gets real chatty with another hummer around 39 seconds, so watch the whole video:)

I had the privilege of photographing the rufous hummingbird this past weekend at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden. It was an amazing day!

My research was done and knew where I wanted to photograph in the Los Angeles/Anaheim area; now I had to find the hummingbirds. With 127 acres to meander through, I knew it might be difficult, but I asked the Lord to help me find them. I was on a tight schedule, only one day to shoot and about 6 hours.

As soon as I walked into the garden, I heard the unfamiliar sounds of hummingbirds not found in Georgia and it excited me! Their calls and wings make amazing sounds—much different than the ruby-throated hummingbird.

I photographed this fellow for two hours. He camped out on the yucca plant and defended the area. After talking to a few people who live out there, they mentioned he was on the same plant last year. One man told me I was lucky to find him because of the drought. He said usually they were everywhere.

Instead of feeding on the flowers frequently, he turned to eating small bugs non-stop. He would land on a branch, fly up to get eat a bug, and repeat.

Maybe one day I can return to this wonderful garden. I barely scratched its surface.
