I am delighted to say the Humminbird Trail, which I designed, at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia is officially open this year. The trail maps are printed and waiting for visitors to get a glimpse of the tiny-jeweled flyers.

There are small numbers of hummingbirds. The best chance to see them in action is later in the season when lots of babies are born.

The hot markers to find them this week are #5 feeding on the purple salvia and feeding on the major wheeler trumpet honeysuckle at marker #19. This photo was taken Wednesday as I sat at marker #19.

Check out his face—it’s dusted with pollen!

Last week I posted a posed coyote. This week I am posting a perfectly posed ruby-throated hummingbird. They are back in Athens, and I am tickled pink. I saw my first one five times yesterday. Bring it on!!

I don’t have much of a green thumb, but I am super glad I planted Mexican sunflowers for the last two years. They are critter magnets.

The ruby-throated hummingbirds feed off the nectar and use the branches as a guard tower. Even though I had three huge plants, this hummingbird hardly tolerated any visitors to “his” plants. 

I was able to photograph this little guy from a hide in the basement of my house. A sheet draped over the open window gave me the perfect advantage point. All I had to do was wait.

I love how he is gazing at the lone flower above him, but in reality, I think he was looking for an intruder.

I enjoyed the Mexican sunflowers in my backyard for the last two years. The birds and butterflies have enjoyed them immensely.

The ruby-throated hummingbirds love to feed on its nectar but also use it as a watchtower to fight off any intruders. This immature male was doing just that!

Immature male ruby-throated hummingbird

I noticed there was an injury to this hummingbird’s beak. Maybe he got it caught in the mesh on someone’s back patio. I think he will be easy to spot this year!

I researched and designed the Hummingbird Trail at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and have been following these little guys around for many years.

One thing I have noticed, no matter where I am, the hummers love the purple salvia! I tell people if they only planted one thing, plant purple salvia. I will be planting several for next year!
