I was thrilled to be greeted by a Bahama Pintail duck when we arrived at the Jardin Botanique De Deshaies in Guadeloupe. He kinda took my breath away—he is gorgeous. This duck has a mutation called leucistic which means it has less pigmentation in the skin. 

This dabbling duck has several other names as well i.e. white-cheeked pintail and summer duck. You may choose to call him whichever you want. To put the icing on the cake, he was swimming in a pond full of coy.

Before I post my “top nine for 2021” photo on Instagram, I wanted to post my favorite five posts from 2021 and see the difference. 

Here they are……  

Backstory:

I’ve saved the life of many animals. It brings me great joy! 

Two baby cardinals fell from a nest and I rescued them. I saved the life of an Eastern red bat, a baby bunny from the jaws of a cat, and now, the life of a duck. Better yet, it was Thanksgiving Day.

I went to a local pond on St. Simons Island, Georgia to see if the hooded mergansers migrated yet. They were not there, but I enjoyed watching the ducks on the shore. 

One duck it particular had several other ducks around it under the brush. I wondered if she was laying an egg. 

As I was driving away, I noticed two goats following a gentleman on a motorized scooter. I stopped to speak to him. How often do you get to see a goat on the island?

His name is Doc. He mentioned the ducks would lay their eggs on the bank of the pond, but raccoons and other animals eat the eggs. He and another lady would gather the eggs. She bought two incubators to hatch them. 

I might know where an egg is. A smile lit my face as I looked down under the brush and found an egg. I was delighted. Doc said, “It’s still warm.” 

Doc took the lady the egg. I was quite ecstatic!

I was thrilled to photograph a northern pintail duck while I was at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina because he was a lifer for me.

It was winter and I was searching the lake for the resident eagles. My mind quickly shifted to the ducks. I was excited as could be! I was so excited that I did not see the bald eagle flying overhead. My husband yelled out to me, then my focus shifted to the eagles.

These little guys migrate to to the southern half of the U.S., Central America, and Mexico. I was in the right place at the right time!

As I was preparing my back patio to have my lakeside breakfast, a mama and her 13 ducklings decided to swim by. I quickly ran inside and grabbed my camera.

They meandered along the cove eating along the shoreline. My presence didn’t seem to bother them as I followed them.

This past winter, a friend took me to photograph a canvasback. I was excited because I have never photographed one. Also, canvasbacks in Tennessee during the winter are uncommon.

 

 I kinda felt sorry for him, because he was the only one of his kind living at the pond. The only other birds were mallards. He blended in but stuck out like a sore thumb.

 

Canvasbacks are wary and he proved no different. When I walked around the lake to him, he swam away.

Matilda

A female mallard duck takes advantage of the quiet playgrounds amid the coronavirus and lays eggs.

Meet Matilda, a female mallard—my new friend. Since the playgrounds are closed because of the coronavirus, they have become a quiet place of peace and solitude. This serenity attracted Matilda to lay a clutch of about 18 eggs underneath the green stairs next to a red slide.

I asked a worker if he had seen any wildlife. He answered, “There are mainly squirrels and ducks.” He then told me about a duck laying on eggs and directed me to her new home.

I gave her duck food to comfort her and waited till the light was void of the harsh shadows to photograph her.

The last time I visited, she was off the nest preening near her mate. This opportunity let me see her eggs from a distance. I can’t wait to meet all her ducklings!!

She is definitely practicing social distancing and has her house decorated early for Christmas!
