Just for Me

“Just for Me”
Judy Royal Glenn Photography

The Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center at Callaway Gardens is an amazing place. Over 1,000 tropical butterflies get to enjoy their short lives in a magical place, filled with abundant flowers, and fresh fruit to feed on.

Time and time again this New Guinea birdwing butterfly landed on the ends of a few tree branches. At first, I thought it was its favorite tree until I realized over the next two days that he never landed there again.

It’s just another one of the God things. I love it!

Juniper

“Juniper”
Judy Royal Glenn Photography

This is Juniper a great horned owl. She can be found at the Callaway Garden’s Bird of Prey program. Callaway has an educational program featuring birds that cannot be released in the wild because they have been injured or have been imprinted on by humans.

Juniper and her brother Cedar fell from a nest and were orphaned. I am very thankful Callaway provides them such a great home.

I decided to post something a little different today—a YouTube video.

I shot the video last summer at the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia. Hope you enjoy:)

They're Coming Back!

They're Coming Back!
Judy Royal Glenn Photography

I checked my favorite hummingbird migration map today and found the hummingbirds are coming back. Here is the link for the 2016 ruby-throated hummingbird migration map:

The hummingbirds are starting to arrive on the coast of Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. I looked through all of her maps dating dating back to 1997. I found they typically reach northern Georgia between March16-26, with a one showing up March 11, and one as late as March 30. There are a lot of dates for their arrival for March 16 to March 26.
I definitely plan on having my feeders out by March 12. I wish I had a huge red banner saying "Welcome home…..please stay with us!"

A Ray of Light

"A Ray of Light"

I love I was able to capture the soft and beautiful ray of light beaming down on this flower. Sometimes light changes so frequently, and if not acted upon quickly enough, it fades away.

Suspended

"Suspended"

When I was at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia, I found a grasshopper from a very different point of view. As I walked though the John A. Sibley Horticultural Center, I was tickled to find a grasshopper on the glass door. I enjoyed photographing him.

I have gone to Callaway Gardens for the last several years to photograph the immense beauty there. I am saddened to hear the John A. Sibley Horticultural Center closed on November 12, 2015 due to the decline in the economy. I will truly miss shooting in the outdoor gardens, as I discovered in the last two years, it is a hummingbird magnet. They love feeding on the purple salvia there.

I attempted to video the fast flying ruby-throated hummingbirds on my cell phone on August 9, 2014. They were zipping by so fast, and I had a hard time keeping track of them!

I shot this video of a hummingbird feeding off the salvia right next to me. He was very trusting of me:)

The Chase

"The Chase"

One of the more challenging tasks of photographing nature and wildlife for me is photographing butterflies. They flit and flutter with no rhyme or reason from one flower to the next.

I photographed this butterfly in the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia. It is a great opportunity to photograph them as they are in an enclosed space….although that does not guarantee an easy photograph.

Hanging On

"Hanging On"
Judy Royal Glenn Photography

The thing I love about dragonflies is they come back to the same perch time and time again like hummingbirds do. It makes it so much easier to photograph them. It just takes patience.

This particular dragonfly usually landed repeatedly on the top of this branch. I guess he tired of doing so and decided to hang on it.

On The Border

"On The Border"
Judy Royal Glenn Photography

I love going to the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center at Callaway Garden.  There are so many different types of butterflies to look at.  I could not photograph my favorite one because it was busy fluttering around.  This butterfly was kind enough to be still for me to photograph it.

I love the pattern on the border of the butterflies wings.

Hummingbird Magnet

"Hummingbird Magnet"

The hummingbirds at Callaway Gardens and The State Botanical Garden of Georgia love the purple and blue salvia/sage. When I was at Callaway Gardens, the hummingbirds went crazy for this flower.

If you are looking to plant a flower to attract hummingbirds, you can't go wrong with this hummingbird magnet!
