"Patty-cake"

"Patty-cake"

Judy Royal Glenn photography

I noticed a large ripple as I passed a creek in Cades Cove, Tennessee. I didn’t see anything at first but upon further inspection, I saw two spring cubs with their mom cooling off from the hot sun.

I couldn’t believe my eyes, and my hand was over my mouth in awe.

My usual prayer is for the Lord to show me or bring to me what he wants me to photograph. He blesses me all the time!

"Lost"

"Lost" - June 24, 2025

Judy Royal Glenn Photography

This is a story of two lost bear cubs in Cades Cove, Tennessee in the Great Smoky National Park.

One hot summer day in June, Ma Bear enjoyed a nice cold dip in the Cades Branch Stream. Meanwhile, her cubs were eating grubs found in the dread tree stump and chasing grasshoppers.

“Hey, where did Ma go?” one cub asked.

“I don't see her anymore.”

“She told us to stay near.”

“It's your fault for chasing that grasshopper.”

“You followed!”

“Look at this mess we got ourselves into.”

“Now, what are we supposed to do?”

“Let’s sniff for her scent.”

“No scent here.”

“There is a road down here. Maybe Ma went this way.”

“I am so thirsty, my tongue is hanging out.”

The bears searched for over forty minutes while running to and fro.

Tired from searching, one cub said, “I need to sit down.”

In the distance, a visitor saw Momma Bear bouncing through the tall thicket toward them.

“There she is!” one cub said.

“Where have y’all been?” Ma Bear said.

“We’ve been chasing grasshoppers.”

“Sorry, Ma. We promise to stay near you.”

“Let’s go,” Ma said.

Off to the woods they went—they finally took a long nap in The Tree.

The End.

*A black bear cub rides his mom’s back in Cades Cove, Tennessee.

With all the talk about snow and cold weather, I thought everyone would like to look back on a photograph from a nice spring day on May 23, 2023.

I never know what is just around the corner to photograph, and that’s one of the reasons I love photography.

This day proved exciting as I found a black bear cub climbing on his mom‘s back, and his brother wanted to join him.

I enjoyed watching this sow and her cubs trouncing through the blackberry bushes looking for food. A boar was bothering her, and she was vigilant to keep her cubs safe.

She stood upright several times, this time for two minutes. Not long after, one of her cubs got a free piggyback ride.

Winnie the Pooh

🧸💚“Winnie the Pooh”🧸💚

Judy Royal Glenn Photography

I had an amazing day in the cove this week and enjoyed watching five bears come in and out of the scene around a large walnut tree.

My day started by waiting on the bears. I was bored, so I got my phone and was curious to see if a text would go through via satellite. I held my phone up to the closest satellite, but the text failed to go through.

I noticed several people coming to where I was standing.

One lady asked, “Did you see those bears run behind you in the back of the field?"

“No, I was playing with my phone.”

The next thing I knew, a mom and her big spring cub came out on the top of the hill on the trail and began to feed the walnuts under the tree.

The bears put on quite a show and many people gathered to watch at one point the mother bear sent her cub up the tree to keep him safe from the other bears. I thought he looked like Winnie the Pooh.

On the Lookout

While a sow was munching on her veggies, her cub was on the lookout for danger in Cades Cove, Tennessee.

It is a thrill when I photograph a baby black bear on its mother’s back. The shots don’t come often. Maybe once in a blue moon.

“When I’m Big Enough . . .”

“When I’m Big Enough . . .”

Judy Royal Glenn Photography

A spring bear cub dreams of getting the tallest cherries in the tree in Cades Cove when he’s big enough.

Photographing the bears in the cherry trees is a beautiful experience. The abundance of cherry trees along Loop Road often lures the bears into open display.

This mom of the four cubs has done a fantastic job teaching them where various food sources are in Cades Cove. However, she is very loose in keeping the youngsters with her. She has left the cubs by themselves several times for long periods. I named the runt Angel and his brother Gabriel. Why I arrived with their names and story will come another day.

“Hanging in There”

“Hanging in There”

Judy Royal Glenn Photography

I enjoyed watching this cub climb the pine tree. The bear family put on a show close to the road as I stood on a hill with a prime view. I’m glad I had my long lens.

You can read the reason for my title in my story below…

I’m sorry, bears, I didn’t get to visit you last week. I had COVID, and even though I wouldn’t be close enough to give you COVID, I didn’t want to get others sick.

I titled this photo to describe my state of being. It’s been a rough late spring and early summer. I had kidney stone surgery at the end of May. The antibiotic gave me C. diff. and chest pains, which ended in a trip to the ER. At my post-op appointment, they discovered I still have a kidney stone that is 4.6mm. I got about 120 chigger bites looking for Monarch caterpillars, then Covid last week.

Bears, it was good to see you this week. You make me smile!

🐻🌹“Ever Vigilant”🐻🌹

Judy Royal Glenn Photography

A mama’s job is never done. That includes

the black bear sow, especially when she has four cubs.

There is so much to do. She has to teach

them how to climb trees, find water and food sources, and protect them from

harm from male bears, coyotes, and bobcats. The list goes on and on.

Thanks for all you do!

Happy Mother’s Day:)
