Rattlesnake Roundup

I thought it was going to be a typical day at The State Botanical Garden of Georgia on Saturday.  A day of chasing hummingbirds in the garden to get the perfect shot.  I love going to the garden; it is like my second home.

Boy was I surprised when a new visitor came to the garden that I hadn't seen before.  A lady told me she saw a snake, and I did not come immediately because I was focused on photographing the hummer and finch in front of me.  A few minutes later she walked past again and mentioned she saw something and did not know what it was.  She believed the snake threw up a rat.

I walked over to where she was standing to find the rat.  She found the snake again, and we discovered it was a Timber Rattlesnake!  She said she would inform someone.  I let people know about the snake as they walked by for their own safety.  I lost it for a while because I went back to taking photos of the hummers.  The man I told earlier showed me where he went, and I ran to get my camera.

As the snake inched forward, I made sure to keep my distance. Little did I know the snake had an agenda.  It was trying to get down a drain, and I was standing between the drain and the snake.  Two police officers came, and I showed them where the snake went.  Soon Staicia and Josh from the Athens-Clarke County Animal Control were there to help:)

A hose was placed down the drain and used to prompt the snake to exit the end of the drain.  The snake was safely captured and taken to live in a big field far away.  A great effort was given by the police and Animal Control to make sure everyone stays safe.  Thanks!

I had a blast!  Did I mention I prayed and asked the Lord to bring to me what He wanted me to photograph?  I hate snakes, but the garden is now clear of a poisonous snake!

Whoooo's Looking At Who?

This owl was completely asleep when I walked up to his cage at the Bear Hollow Zoo.  As soon as I got my camera set up, he was peering around his box looking at me.  I feel sorry for the animals, but I know it is best for them because their injury or physical problems won't allow them to make it in the wild.  The owl is probably just as entertained by looking at me.

This Great Blue Heron looked cross-eyed when he chased after a pair of horseflies.  The horseflies constantly bit him and would not leave him alone.

Today I wanted a break from the normal path I usually take while at The State Botanical Garden of Georgia.  It was refreshing, and I enjoyed it very much:)

I went to The State Botanical Garden of Georgia this morning to fulfill the green photography challenge for the week.  Check out Darren's site and join the fun.  http://digital-photography-school.com/green-weekly-photography-challenge..  Thanks to Darren for letting us enjoy his weekly challenges:)

This female Ruby-Throated Hummingbird loves this particular branch to observe other hummingbirds coming into her territory.  She constantly scans the sky and quickly chases off any visitors.  She is surrounded by the green of her territory, and she is faced just so to reveal the iridescent green on her head:)

Although it may appear I was in a village in the Alps, I was only in Mr. Cason's Vegetable Garden at Callaway Gardens.  I was scouting out hummingbirds there:)

I love this photo because it looks like a portrait to me.  The background resembles a backdrop found at a portrait studio, and it looks like I staged everything myself!

"Jesus.....how do you do that?"

This particular morning yielded little fruit, so I decided to go to the beach and check out my normal spot.  At first, I saw a Reddish Egret and followed him around forever.  In the distance, I also saw another bird; as I got closer I noticed it was a Great Blue Heron!  Where he went, I followed.  I would inch closer to him and quickly set up my tripod to get a good shot.

He was across a small wading pool when suddenly he landed twenty feet right in front of my tripod.  I thought, "Jesus.....how do you do that?"  He is an awesome God and is just good like that!

Again I had prayed for the Lord to bring to me what He wanted photographed.  The heron landed right in front of my camera!  I was so excited and thankful for His continued efforts to answer my prayers with my photography!  This shot was taken the same morning.

This Osprey was not happy with me at all.  He wanted me to stay away because his nest was right behind him.  He was being very protective because I seemed like a threat.  He did not know I just wanted to take pictures!

Compassion

When I take photos, I seem to find lame or injured animals.  This Mallard has what I named a cleft lip.  I don't know if she was born that way or if she was injured.  The thing I love about these injured animals is they appear strong and resilient not letting their impediment hold them back.  They have to learn to adapt and move forward.  I have compassion for them.  What lesson can we learn from them?
